Rehearse it before you need it
A recovery plan you haven't tried is a guess. Run a drill when traffic is quiet:
- Write down each step and who does it, in the order you'd do them.
- Lower the DNS record's TTL to 300 seconds a day before.
- Stop writes on the primary, then promote the replica (on PostgreSQL 12 and later,
SELECT pg_promote();). - Switch DNS, test the app, and time the whole thing: that is your real recovery time.
- Fail back, and rebuild the replica from the new primary.
- Restore one backup to a scratch VPS to prove the backups work.
