WHOIS · RDAP · .in · .com

Free WHOIS lookup, straight from the registry.

See which registrar a domain is with, when it was created and when it expires, which locks are on and which nameservers answer for it. Your browser asks the registry's own RDAP server, so you get the live record, not a cached copy.

No sign-up .in records from NIXI Dates in IST

Check a domain's WHOIS record

Works for .in, .co.in and the rest of the .in family, .com, .net, .org and most other extensions. Dates are converted to IST, and the raw RDAP response is one click away.

WHOIS guide

What a WHOIS record tells you, and what it doesn't.

What a WHOIS lookup returns

Every registry keeps a public record for each domain it runs. That record used to be served by the old WHOIS protocol on port 43; today it comes from RDAP, the Registration Data Access Protocol, which returns structured data over HTTPS with the same field names everywhere. Since 28 January 2025 ICANN no longer requires gTLD registries and registrars to keep port-43 WHOIS running, so RDAP is the dependable source. NIXI publishes RDAP for the whole .in family as well.

Whatever the extension, a lookup gives you these fields:

FieldWhat it tells you
RegistrarThe company the domain is registered through, with its IANA ID for gTLDs. Only the registrar can renew, unlock or change it for you.
RegisteredWhen the name was first created. A date in the last 60 days means it can't be transferred yet.
Last changedThe most recent update to the record: a renewal, new nameservers or a contact change.
ExpiresWhen the current registration period ends. We show it in IST, with the time left.
StatusEPP status codes: the locks, holds and grace periods decoded further down this page.
NameserversThe servers that hold the domain's DNS, which tells you where its records are edited.
DNSSECWhether the registry holds a DS record for the domain, meaning its DNS is signed.
Abuse contactThe registrar's address for reporting phishing, malware or spam on the domain.

How to read a result in four steps

Work through the four key fields in order and you'll know who controls the domain, how long it has left and what can be done with it.

  1. Registrar: who you deal with. Renewals, unlocking and EPP (transfer) codes all go through the registrar shown. If you bought the domain from a web host or reseller, the registrar named may be the wholesale company behind them; your account and invoices are still with whoever you paid.
  2. Expiry date: how much time is left. Renew well before it. After expiry there's a grace period of up to 30 days at the normal renewal price; after that the name enters redemption, and getting it back costs a restore fee (at VirtualCloud ₹4,999 for the .in family and ₹6,999 for gTLDs, plus the renewal). If the status shows autoRenewPeriod, the registry has already added a year that the registrar can still take back if the renewal isn't paid.
  3. Status: what's locked. clientTransferProhibited is normal and good: nobody can move the name without your say-so. clientHold, serverHold, redemptionPeriod and pendingDelete mean trouble, as the next table explains.
  4. Nameservers: where DNS lives. If they belong to your web host, edit DNS records in its control panel (in cPanel, the Zone Editor). If they belong to your registrar or a provider such as Cloudflare, edit them there. Changing nameservers moves every record at once, so copy the existing ones first, then confirm the new answers with our DNS lookup and record checker.

EPP status codes: normal, warning or urgent

Codes that start with client are set by the registrar; codes that start with server are set by the registry, and only the registry can lift them. A healthy domain usually shows two or three client locks and nothing else.

StatusMeaningWhat to do
ok / activeNo locks or holdsNothing. Consider turning the transfer lock on.
clientTransferProhibitedTransfer lock on at the registrarNormal. Turn it off only while you move the domain.
clientUpdateProhibitedContacts and nameservers lockedA safety lock; the registrar lifts it on request.
serverTransferProhibitedThe registry blocks transfersUsual for 60 days after a registration or transfer, or during a dispute.
autoRenewPeriodRenewed by the registry at expiryPay the renewal at your registrar, or the extra year is reversed.
clientHold / serverHoldSuspended and removed from DNSSite and email are down. Usual causes: an unpaid renewal or an owner email never verified. Contact the registrar.
redemptionPeriodExpired and deleted, still restorableOnly the last owner can restore it, for a fee. Act now.
pendingDeletePast every grace periodCan't be restored; released to the public in about five days.
pendingTransferA move to another registrar is waitingDidn't ask for it? Contact your registrar straight away.
inactiveNo nameservers delegatedSet nameservers at the registrar or the domain won't resolve.

.in and .co.in domains: what's different

Every name in the .in family (.in, .co.in, .net.in, .org.in, .firm.in, .gen.in and .ind.in) is run by NIXI, the National Internet Exchange of India, as the .IN Registry. Our tool asks NIXI's RDAP server, rdap.nixiregistry.in, directly. A few things work differently from .com:

  • One registry, one set of rules. The grace period, redemption and transfer process are the same across the family, and so is our restore fee: ₹4,999 plus the renewal.
  • No privacy add-on. Registry policy doesn't allow a WHOIS privacy service on .in names. Personal contact details are redacted from the public record anyway; some records still show the registrant's organisation, state or country.
  • Accurate details are required. NIXI can ask registrants to verify their contact details and can suspend names registered with false information, so keep the email at your registrar current.
  • Disputes go to INDRP. Complaints about .in names, such as cybersquatting on a trademark, are decided under the .IN Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy, run by NIXI. gTLDs such as .com use ICANN's UDRP instead.
  • Prices. With us, .in domain registration costs ₹499 for the first year and ₹799 to renew or transfer; a .co.in domain is ₹399, then ₹599 (+ GST). See domain prices for every extension.

Why the owner's name is hidden

Since the EU's GDPR took effect in 2018, registries and registrars have redacted personal data from public WHOIS by default, and India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 points the same way. Where the registrant's name, email, phone and street address used to be, expect REDACTED FOR PRIVACY or no registrant entry at all.

That doesn't make an owner unreachable. Use the registrar's contact form or the abuse address in the result; registrars forward or act on legitimate requests. Courts, law enforcement and rights holders can ask a registrar for the underlying data through formal channels.

Your own domainsOn eligible gTLDs registered with VirtualCloud, including .com, .net, .org and .store, WHOIS privacy is included at no extra cost. It isn't available on .in names, for the registry reason above.

The name is taken. Six things you can still do.

A registered result isn't always the end of the road. These are the options that work, roughly in order of how often they pay off.

If yourbrand.in is gone, yourbrand.co.in or yourbrand.com may be free. For an Indian business, .co.in reads just as local and costs ₹399 for the first year.

Keep an eye on the expiry

An unrenewed .com goes through up to 30 days of grace, about 30 days of redemption and about five days of pending delete before anyone can register it. Most owners renew, so treat a drop as a bonus, not a plan.

If the name matches a trademark you hold and was registered and used in bad faith, you can file a complaint: INDRP for .in names, UDRP for gTLDs. It's a legal process, so take advice first.

It's free and needs no account, and we don't cap lookups. Registries do: run many in quick succession and one may answer with HTTP 429 for a minute or two. The tool tells you when that happens.

For .com and many other gTLDs the registry renews a name automatically at expiry and shows autoRenewPeriod, so its date can be a year ahead of what you've paid for. Registries also record times in UTC; we convert them to IST, which can move a date near midnight by a day.

Usually not by name. Personal contact details are redacted from the public record, and what you see is what the registry publishes. To reach the holder, use the registrar's contact channel; courts and law enforcement can request the underlying data.

At your registrar: this tool only reads the public record. For domains registered with VirtualCloud, open the domain under Client area › Domains and edit its contact details. Keep the email address current, because registries send verification and transfer messages to it.

Very likely. "No registration found" means the registry has no record of it. Reserved and premium names can also come back empty, so the live check at checkout has the final word. We sell .in from ₹499 and .co.in from ₹399 for the first year, plus GST.

No. A lookup is an anonymous read of a public record, and neither the registrant nor the registrar is told who asked. Our tool also sends the request without cookies or a referrer.
