₹0 for year one with 12-month+ web or WordPress hosting. How it works
Who can register a .in domain? Anyone with accurate details.
NIXI has no residency or citizenship rule for .in. What the registry does insist on is that the person or organisation behind the name is real and can be reached.
- Individuals, freelancers and sole proprietors, for a portfolio, a practice or a side business.
- Companies, LLPs and partnership firms, registered in the business's own name.
- NGOs, trusts, schools and societies, though .org.in may say it better.
- NRIs and businesses outside India that serve Indian customers. A foreign address is accepted.
- An Indian address
- A GST number
- Company papers
- A trade mark
NIXI's .in rules, in plain words.
The .IN Registry is run by NIXI, the National Internet Exchange of India, and every .in registrar works under its policies. These six are the ones that affect you day to day.
-
01
Your details must be real
Register in the name of the person or business that will use the domain. Update contact details within 7 days of any change and answer an accuracy check within 15 days, or the name can be suspended.
-
02
No WHOIS privacy on .in
Registry policy doesn't allow a privacy service on .in names, so no registrar can sell one. Register to a business address rather than your home if that matters to you. A WHOIS lookup shows what is public.
-
03
60 days before it can move
A new .in can't transfer to another registrar for 60 days after registration or a previous transfer. After that, unlock it, copy the auth code and the transfer adds a year.
-
04
What a name can contain
Letters a–z, digits 0–9 and hyphens, up to 63 characters before the .in. A name can't start or end with a hyphen, and capital letters make no difference.
-
05
Some names are held back
The registry reserves certain names and prices some short or dictionary names as premium. Checkout always shows the real price before you pay, so there are no surprises later.
-
06
Disputes go to INDRP
If a trade mark owner says your name copies their mark, the case goes to arbitration under NIXI's INDRP. A name registered in bad faith can be handed to the complainant.
The full terms are in our domain registration agreement, which sits alongside NIXI's own policies.

Renewal, grace and redemption: what a late .in costs.
A .in doesn't disappear on its expiry date, but every stage after it costs more and the last one can't be undone. Turn on auto-renew and we also email you 30, 7 and 1 days before expiry.

The registry deletes the name and anyone can register it. It can't be recovered.
All amounts exclude 18% GST. Restore fees are set by the registry. Compare recovery costs for every extension.
Pay for several years, and it can't lapse.
A multi-year registration costs the first-year price plus the renewal for each extra year, the same total as renewing yearly, but there's no expiry date to miss in between.

Four things to do once the .in is yours.
A new domain does nothing until it points somewhere. These steps take you from a bare name to a website and inbox your customers can trust.
-
Point it at your website
Hosting with us? Set the nameservers from your welcome email. Hosting elsewhere? Keep our free DNS and add the A and CNAME records your host gives you, then check propagation.
How to point a domain to hosting -
Create email on the .in
Addresses such as [email protected] look right on GST invoices. Use business email from ₹49 a mailbox, or create mailboxes in cPanel.
Create an email account in cPanel -
Add SPF, DKIM and DMARC
Three TXT records that keep your mail out of spam folders. Afterwards, check what the world sees with our free DNS lookup.
Set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC -
Switch on HTTPS
Once the .in points at your hosting, free AutoSSL issues a certificate for it. Need a padlock with company validation? See SSL certificates.

If most of your customers are in India, .in is the natural first choice: it reads as local and costs less to keep, ₹799 a year against ₹1,199 for .com. If you sell abroad, lead with .com and keep the .in as a redirect. Our guide .in or .com? Choosing a domain name for an Indian business walks through the trade-offs.
Yes. .in has no residency or citizenship rule, so NRIs and foreign companies can register one. Give a real postal address in whichever country you're in, plus an email address and phone number that work.
No. You don't upload any documents to register a .in. If you want to claim input tax credit on the purchase, add your GSTIN to your billing profile before you pay so the invoice carries it. How GST invoices work.
The .IN Registry doesn't allow privacy services on .in names, so no registrar can offer one. If you'd rather your home address wasn't attached to the domain, register it to your business and use the business address.
Google treats .in as a sign that a site is aimed at India, which can help you appear in Indian searches. It isn't a shortcut, though: a fast site, useful content and links from other sites matter far more than the extension.
Yes, once 60 days have passed since it was registered or last transferred. Unlock it at your current registrar, copy the auth code and start a domain transfer. It costs ₹799 + GST and adds a year to the expiry date.
No. The registration is paid to the registry as soon as it's submitted, so it's non-refundable. If the .in came free with hosting and you cancel the hosting within the money-back period, ₹499 is deducted from the hosting refund. See the refund policy.
Is yourbrand.in still free?
Search checks the name with the registry and shows the renewal price next to the first-year one.
